Today we celebrate the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time and also Heritage Sunday in our PNC Church.
Today’s Gospel shows us the example of the two apostles: James and John who misinterpreted what Jesus is saying about the Kingdom of God and the position of the leaders in it. They recognize this Kingdom in the terms of human Kingdom, and they think of the good position in it, but Jesus tells of the Kingdom which is contrary to the values of this world. And position of someone in that state is absolutely different because when you are as Jesus Christ who came to serve, not to be served, you are the greatest one in the Kingdom of God.
The Baptism and the Eucharist start our own fate of suffering and dying for others – this is a realization of the commandment of love. To give everything for others especially our private lives, this reminds us that both of these sacraments are forms of dying of oneself in order to live for and in Christ.
“To sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give”

- “I used to share this with the men at the prison I visited. I’d give them the example: If you had to go on a trip, what would you need? And the men would say, ‘You’d need a car and you’d need gasoline,’ (One man said, Music!) We used to have a good time because we usually decided that the gasoline was prayer, the car was our life, the journey was to heaven, you had to have a map, you had to know where you were going and so on.” (Mother Teresa – A simple path.)
One Main Point
Jesus teaches his disciples about what it means to be a Christian: it is NOT to “lord it” over others. It is to be a servant, the one who waits on tables. And honor is achieved through one’s suffering as a servant.
Reflections
- I imagine myself present with James and John in their “private” meeting with Jesus. As they have asked favors from him, so have I. What are the favors I have asked of Jesus? How would he answer me?
- In my community (family, social group, church, etc) how do I serve others? Would Jesus have to say to me, “It should not be so among you”?
- The disciples were shortsighted, ambitious, and selfish men. What love and confidence Jesus must have had on these men who went on to become pillars of the church. How do I look upon my brothers and their weaknesses? How should I look upon them?
