Today we celebrate the Eighth Sunday of Ordinary Time and Pre-Lent Quinquagesima Sunday. Usually, Lent would have begun by now, but this year it is little be late.
We need to be careful, in how we pass judgment, and how we respond to the present crisis in Ukraine. In the Gospels of the last two weekends, Jesus insisted that we “love our enemies”. He wasn’t joking! Therefore, we pray for the peace in Ukraine, for Poland our sister country.
In today’s Gospel passage, taken again from the Sermon on the Plain given in Luke’s Gospel, Jesus condemns our careless and rash judgments about the behavior, motives, or actions of others by using the funny examples of one blind man leading another blind man and one man with a log stuck in his eye, trying to remove a tiny speck from another’s eye.
This Wednesday Lent begins. I need this Lent. Perhaps you do too. Lent is a time for us to grow in our faith life, let the Holy Spirit guide us. Lent is a time for us to look into ourselves.

“Each tree is known by its yield.”

Jesus continues to teach his disciples the wise ways of God.
Reflections
- Don’t you think Jesus’ message of love (offering the other cheek) is passive? Did you ever take this approach to solve your conflict? What were the end results?
- Do you have an enemy? How did this person become your enemy? Whose fault was that? What are your real enemies? Can you make peace and pray for this person?
